Speciality gas equipment supplier SGD has announced the retirement of its President, Frank Scornavacca.

Scornavacca started the company back in 1992 after having spent 32 years with Matheson Gas Products.

He began the company when he saw that the distributors of industrial gases and welding gases had a future in the growing specialty gas market but were at a disadvantage when it came to being able to participate in the necessary equipment market portion.

They needed a wholesale partner who would fill the gap. That partner became SGD Inc., a wholesale supplier that was geared to give personal service by providing direct contact with knowledgeable technical people; a full line of high quality products delivered promptly either to them or drop-shipped directly to their customer; plus a specialty gas equipment catalogue private labelled for their sales force to provide to customers.

This combination of services allows the gas distributor to compete profitably with a minimum investment.

During his time with SGD, Scornavacca helped to train staff to not only produce products but with the technical expertise to provide better and more economical solutions and equipment.

Whilst with Matheson, Scornavacca helped to develop many new products including the introduction of the metal diaphragm pressure regulator that is today’s industry standard to ensure the delivery of high purity gases to analytical instruments and other processes requiring such gases.

He also developed the two-stage stainless steel pressure regulator required in the early days of the semiconductor manufacturing business.

Scott Varian will now replace Scornavacca as President after working for SGD for 25 years.
