Global technology company ABB has joined the HyPilot project, an in-field demonstration led by Hystar AS (Hystar). ABB’s involvement includes the supply of crucial power technology, featuring leading-edge components for precise voltage and current control to replicate various operational scenarios.

The HyPilot project aims to validate Hystar’s one-megawatt (MW) containerised PEM electrolysers under realistic field conditions and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023 at the Kårstø Gas Processing Plant in Rogaland, Norway.

Joining industry leaders Equinor, Yara and Gassco, ABB will contribute low-harmonic insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) rectifiers and DC-DC converters to regulate the electricity supply, enabling the electrolyser to function effectively in the field. Throughout the project’s duration, ABB will offer on-site support and expertise in Norway.

Fredrik Mowill, CEO of Hystar, emphasised the significance of the project, stating, “HyPilot represents an important milestone for the green hydrogen industry, as it unites leading industry players behind Hystar’s patented, ultra-efficient electrolysers.”
