Japan-based Inpex Corporation (INPEX) has selected Air Liquide’s Autothermal Reforming (ATR) technology to produce low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia as part of a demonstration project designed to showcase the technology’s capability of producing clean fuels.
When combined with carbon capture technology, ATR is considered one of the latest technologies for enabling the production of large-scale, low carbon hydrogen and ammonia, allowing users to achieve higher energy efficiency at reduced cost.
According to Air Liquide, the technology will be supplied to INPEX through its subsidiary Air Liquide Engineering & Construction, marking Japan’s first demonstration project integrating low carbon hydrogen and ammonia production with carbon capture.

The pilot will become part of the development of the Kashiwazaki Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia Project in the Hirai area of Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
Air Liquide has designed, integrated and operated ATR plants for a range of industries including 12 large ATR plants with a single-train ATR capacity of up to 450,000 Nm3/h (normal cubic metres per hour).
In addition to ATR, solutions include Steam Methane Reforming – a technology that enables hydrogen production on both a small and large scale with carbon capture and storage (CCS).
