Air Products is to substantially increase its supply of hydrogen to Marathon Petroleum Company LP’s refinery, a subsidiary of Marathon Oil Corporation.
Air Products is assisting Marathon Petroleum Company LP in meeting its growing need for hydrogen. The recipient, a subsidiary of Marathon Oil Corporation, requires additional hydrogen to meet the production demands of its Garyville refinery in Louisiana. The extra hydrogen will be delivered in two stages; with the first instalment this year, and the second in 2012. In total, Air Products will augment the hydrogen supply to Marathon’s refinery by approximately 25 million standard cubic feet per day.
Air Products’ Louisiana General Manager, Tom Wendahl was pleased with the expansion, he commented, “We are very pleased to again be expanding our relationship with Marathon at Garyville. Our new facility had been supplying both hydrogen and steam to the refinery operations and we are able to meet the needs of additional hydrogen demand from the on-site facility and its pipeline network connection. We are able to provide product reliability and have flexibility in meeting increased hydrogen needs through the connection to the largest hydrogen pipeline network in Louisiana.”
Development in the pipeline
Air Products commercialised its Garyville hydrogen plant in late 2009, having supplied hydrogen via pipeline to Marathon’s refinery since 1993. The development is indicative of Air Products ever-growing hydrogen pipeline supply in the Gulf Coast. Indeed, only last year the company announced plans to construct a new 180-mile long pipeline.
