Asahi Kasei proves high-purity biomethane technology in Japan


Technology and chemical company Asahi Kasei has completed a live trial of its zeolite-based biogas purification system in Kurashiki, Japan.

The project, which started in February, produced biomethane with yield of up to 99.5% or more and purity of at least 97% from biogas sourced partially from sewage sludge at the Kojima Sewage Treatment Plant.

To achieve this, Asahi Kasei used a system that separates carbon dioxide and methane from biogas through a combination of vacuum swing adsorption and a natural mineral adsorbent called zeolite. This combination allowed the company to obtain both high purity and high yield, where usually there is a trade-off.

The level of purity means the company can use biomethane as a fuel to feed into a natural gas pipeline injection or as compressed natural gas.
