BASF produces green ammonia from Germany plant

Chemical giant BASF has begun producing green ammonia at its Verbund site in Ludwigshafen.

The company is producing two new renewable ammonia grades – renewable ammonia and renewable ammonia solution 24.5%.

It is feeding hydrogen into the ammonia plant which reduces the plant’s natural gas consumption.

The renewable energy-derived hydrogen has been certified according to global certification ISCC+, and can be used as drop-in replacement for conventional products.

The renewable ammonia grades are available in usual bulk mode.

“Our biggest goal is Net Zero for our products. With our renewable ammonia, we can significantly undercut the product carbon footprint of our other low-CO2 ammonia grades,” said Dr Jens Aßmann, Vice-President Business Management Ammonia Value Chain and Operations Amino Resins at BASF.

Demand for low-carbon or green ammonia is expected to rise.

“Our customers, as well as BASF’s own downstream businesses, need low-carbon products already today to explore their market,” Aßmann added.

The expansion of the ammonia portfolio is a further step for BASF’s Monomers division, which is developing one circular or low-carbon option for every major product line by 2025.
