bp submits bid for large-scale green hydrogen project

Energy giant bp has submitted its bid for proposed large-scale green hydrogen production facility, HyGreen Teesside, a project that aims to be one of the biggest of its kind in the UK.

In addition to submitting the bid to the UK government’s Hydrogen Business Model (HBM) and Net Zero Hydrogen Fund (NZHF), bp also confirmed four new Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for use of the green hydrogen in business and communities.

Set to play an important role in advancing the UK’s Net Zero ambitions, HyGreen aims to deliver up to 5% of the UK’s hydrogen target of 10GW (gigawatts) by 2030 following its initial planned phase of 80MWe (megawatt equivalent) of production capacity by 2025.

Green hydrogen produced at the facility will power the equivalent of over 10,000 heavy goods vehicles and could also be used to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors and heat homes.
