CEMEX invests in Carbon Upcycling Technologies for decarbonised cement production

CEMEX Ventures is expanding in the sustainable concrete space, having announced an investment in Canadian carbon utilisation and grinding technologies company Carbon Upcycling Technologies.

Announcing its investment on Thursday (21st April), CEMEX said the move will help scale its capability to reduce clinker, a stony residue from burnt coal or a furnace, from its cement production process.

To do this, Carbon Upcycling’s solution infuses carbon into a grinding process for industrial residues, such as fly ashes and slag, to produce a more reactive supplementary cementitious material.

Once produced, the materials can then be used to replace clinker in cement production. The blended cement and concretes resulting from this process can achieve carbon dioxide (CO2) reductions of up to 30%.
