CGG and Baker Hughes announce CCS alliance

Technology specialist CGG has formed a carbon capture and storage (CCS) alliance with Baker Hughes in a bid to actively support low-carbon markets with new technologies.

Announced today (8th May) at the 2024 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, the partnership hopes to support the rapid uptake of CCS projects globally by providing integrated end-to-end solutions.

Specifically, CGG and Baker Hughes said they will investigate innovations to screen, select, characterise, and monitor potential carbon storage sites.

Back in 2021, CGG released a new GeoVerse™ Carbon Storage screening study to help identify suitable CO2 storage sites. At the time, the company said the product would address a wide spectrum of applications, from geothermal resource assessment, through critical mineral exploration and carbon sequestration.

Peter Whiting, Executive Vice-President of Geoscience at CGG, identified CCS as a high-growth market that is expected to play an important role in dealing with CO2 emissions.

He continued, “By combining the considerable expertise and complementary technologies of the two companies in the CCS arena, operators will benefit from more efficient and cost-effective solutions.”

Baker Hughes believes that some industrial processes in the global economy cannot decarbonise without carbon capture technologies. The company says that carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) may be the only way to address the nearly 25% of point source industrial emissions that cannot be avoided.

Ahmed Eldemerdash, Vice-President of Oilfield Services and Equipment for New Energies at Baker Hughes, notes that the alliance will bring to bear fully complementary skillsets throughout the CCS value chain.

He continued, “The combination of Baker Hughes and CGG subsurface and surface capabilities will provide our customers in CCS an unmatched support to de-risk technical and economic challenges from strategy to CO2 storage site construction, and lifetime monitoring.”

North American CO2 Summit 2024

Join gasworld in September 2024 as our North American CO2 Summit heads to Nashville. More information including our theme and agenda will be released over the coming weeks – you can register your interest to ensure you stay updated.

Our North American CO2 Summit 2023 agenda was focused on how to source, move and use CO2 more effectively and sold out, so we recommend securing your space.
