China’s Dalian shipbuilding begins work on LNG-powered box ship

Dalian Shipbuilding (DSIC), part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has started the construction of the tenth 16,000 TEU containership built for Swiss shipping giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

The ship will be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and has been designed with a host of high-efficiency, environmentally friendly, and energy-saving features. Other equipment includes an air lubrication system, shaft generator, and an energy-saving guide wheel positioned before the propeller. The containership is fitted with a hybrid exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber) in line with the IMO 2020 requirement.

 It is expected that all the energy-saving technology will mean that the energy efficiency design index (EEDIS) will allow the vessel to exceed the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) emission reduction targets.
