Cryospain to supply ‘state-of-the-art’ cryogenic tanks for Mexico ASU

Cryogenic equipment specialist Cryospain will supply a range of its tanks to be fitted into a new modular air separation plant for the supply of gases from the air to local industries in Mexico, either by pipeline or by bulk supply.

The project will see Cryospain designing and delivering two low-pressure liquefied gas storage tanks. A 2250m3 tank will contain liquid oxygen, while the second tank will have a volume of 3,700m3 and will be used to store liquid nitrogen.

Designed to keep gases at extremely low temperatures, the company’s tanks will comprise part of a ‘state-of-the-art’ air separation unit (ASU) to be operated by an unnamed client.

The client will take care of filtering, compressing, cool and liquefying the air through fractional distillation.

“This is not the first time Cryospain equipment has been incorporated into modular design plants,” said a company spokesperson. “In 2023, we contributed to the construction of a modular ASU plant based on the client’s specifications, a project that relief on two of our greatest strengths: our productive capacity and Cryospain’s human capital.”

According to the company, installation of the tanks will be carried out under partial supervision by a local firm with equipment sent over from Spain.

The tanks are designed at a pressure of 480 mbarg (millibar) and minimum temperature of -196C or 77K and delivery of the kit equipment is expected in different stages between October 2024 and February 2025.

With a global market value of $6.1bn, the air fractionation area is expected to grow to $10.4bn in the next decade, at a CAGR of 5.48%, according to Global News Wire.

“At Cryospain we have contributed to the advancement of leading initiatives in this sector through our cryogenic equipment, demonstration exceptional versatility in providing solutions,” said the company.

This was showcased in 2022, when the company delivered more than 650 metres of custom-made cryogenic piping for an ASU that now produces more than 2,400 tonnes of liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen and liquid argon.

Pierre Meurgey, Sales and Marketing Director & Member of the Board of Directors at Cryospain, delivered a presentation on ‘building out virtual pipelines’, in the context of clean energies, at the gasworld Decarbonisation Summit in New Jersey on Wednesday. Click here to read his insights.
