British power generation specialist developer Drax has paused its planned multi-million-pound investment programme in bioenergy and carbon capture and storage (BECCS) until the UK government provides clarity over its commitment to the project.
Having previously welcomed the Government’s support for CCS in the recent budget, Drax stated that it needs a ‘firm commitment’ to BECCS before committing to investing £2bn ($2.4bn) into installing technology at its 2.6-gigawatt (GW) Drax Power Station.
Without commitment, Drax may be unable to pursue its BECCS project which it needs to gain Track 1 status, without which, Drax Power Station may become unviable and unable to contribute secure power at a time of critical need.
