EFC Gases & Advanced Materials awarded for environmental excellence

EFC Gases & Advanced Materials has been awarded for its environmental consciousness, having been awarded the Environmental Excellence Award at the 2024 Compressed Gas Association (CGA) Annual Meeting.

The recognition was related to EFC’s neon gas recycling system, which ensures long-term stable pricing and supply chain continuity for neon, supporting semiconductor manufacturing.

By capturing and recycling laser gas, the system facilitates improved financial planning and enhances operational efficiency for businesses across the semiconductor sector.

The recycling could potentially reduce over one million metric tonnes of associated carbon dioxide emissions per semiconductor fabrication facility over the next two decades through offsetting neon production.

At the time of release, Matt Adams, Executive Vice-President of EFC, described the system as a significant leap in excimer laser technology, improving operation efficiency, and offering environmental benefits.

While neon is universally associated with brightly coloured signage, neon’s largest downstream application is lasers. Accounting for up to 90% of neon gas laser demand, the semiconductor industry uses neon as a buffer and carrier gas within a mixture termed excimer gas.

This mixture generates the single wavelength of light used for deep ultraviolet photolithography, the process used to transfer a pattern to the surface of a wafer during fabrication.

The CGA collaborates with over 130 member companies globally and  is committed to developing technical specifications, safety standards, and best practices for the handling, storage, and transportation of industrial and medical gases.

Further to that, the association works closely with governmental agencies to shape responsible regulations and ensure industry compliance, thus promoting safety in the workplace.

Being recognised by such a body underscores EFC’s dedication to ingenuity, safety, and environmental responsibility.
