EU-funded project could advance biomethane potential by 66%

A new EU-funded project aims to bring together 22 partners from nine European countries to advance the potential of biomethane, scaling up support of its production to 35 billion cubic metres by 2030 proposed by the REPowerEU.

Named BIOMETHAVERSE, the project sets out to increase the biomethane production potential in Europe, boosting its current production by 66%.

A sustainable substitute to natural gas, biomethane can act as an energy store and perform as a flexible renewable energy carrier and fuel.

Building on the biomethane market’s growth over the past decade, total biomethane production is expected to reach 35 bcm by 2030, according to EBA Statistical Report 2022.
