European biomethane capacity hits 7bcm but ‘must grow faster’


European’s biomethane installed production capacity reached 7 billion cubic metres (bcm) by the end of Q1, up 9% on 2024, according to the European Biogas Association (EBA).

Yet growth is beginning to slow, despite investor appetite remaining strong, and remaining slightly higher than last year at €28bn.

 This gap between actual and needed growth highlights the need for clear policy strategy on biogases, binding targets as proposed in a recent sector call for a 2040 Roadmap, and swift regulatory action to accelerate the sector before momentum is lost, according to the EBA.
