Filters to convert nitrates back to nitrogen

Nitrate filters have been set-up in 4 locations in Huron-Kinloss, Canada in an attempt to tackle water quality problems, recognising the detrimental effect nitrates have on water supplies.

Filters developed at the University of Waterloo use wood chips and percolation to change nitrates in the water back to nitrogen and are expected to remove between 50-100% of nitrates, depending on seasonal temperatures.

Nitrates can occur from a number of sources including septic systems and fertilizers, and levels will continue to be monitored following the installation of the filters.
