FuelCell Energy supports Californian bio-generation project

Renewable energy company Ameresco will utilise FuelCell Energy’s carbonate fuel cell technology in its California-based bio-generation project, which will convert on-site biofuel into clean electricity.

Designed for the Sacramento Area Sewer District (Sacramento Sewer), the site will deploy a 2.8MW carbonate fuel cell platform. The platform produces power and uses fuel heat from biogas and has the potential to also produce green hydrogen.

Jason Few, President and CEO of FuelCell Energy, described the company’s patented power platforms as unique in their ability to run on on-site biogas without combustion.

He continued, “FuelCell Energy’s technology is also helping local governments meet their sustainability goals by minimising or avoiding the use of combustion-based boilers for heat, while boosting their resiliency and limiting their dependence on the local grid.”

FuelCell Energy will also provide maintenance services for the fuel cell system.

The company has been doing business in California since 2005 and has partnered with several government entities. This includes three other installations that have been successfully running on biogas in Riverside, San Bernardino, and Tulare.

Carbonate fuel cells have a unique ability to capture CO2 emissions from industrial sources before they are released into the atmosphere, while also making valuable co-products.

In turn, this increases the overall efficiency of the capture process and provides additional value streams that reduce the cost of carbon capture and storage.

Additionally, the technology is modular, potentially enabling carbon capture across a wide range of deployment scales. When the technology is ready for broadscale implementation, it could offer economical decarbonisation solutions for customers from a wide range of industries.

North American CO2 Summit 2024

Join gasworld in September 2024 as our North American CO2 Summit heads to Nashville. More information including our theme and agenda will be released over the coming weeks – you can register your interest to ensure you stay updated.

Our North American CO2 Summit 2023 agenda was focused on how to source, move and use CO2 more effectively and sold out, so we recommend securing your space.
