To help boost global efforts to reach net zero greenhouse emissions by 2050, the Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) has awarded UK company Harbour Energy a license to store captured carbon dioxide (CO2) in geological formations in an area of the southern North Sea.
Harbour has selected to use Viking and Victor, two depleted Rotliegend gas fields, around 140km (87m) from the Lincolnshire coast to store the carbon. The formations are located around 9,000ft (2,743m) below the seabed.
Commenting on the award, Phil Kirk, President, CEO (Europe), Harbour Energy, said, “The OGA’s decision to grand Harbour Energy a carbon storage license is great news for the Humber and for the V Net Zero Humber Cluster.”
