Helium One reports ‘elevated gas shows’ at Itumbula West-1

Helium One has reached total depth at its Itumbula West-1 well in Tanzania, with its CEO, Lorna Blaisse, confirming elevated helium shows.

In an update released today (25th January), the helium exploration company said the helium shows were over twenty times above background while drilling through the Lake Beds Formation, Red Sandstone Group, Karoo, and Basement targets.

In addition to helium, the well also encountered a high concentration of hydrogen in the Lakebed Formation over a six-meter interval. Hydrogen shows also continued through the Karoo section and into the Basement.

Blaisse expanded, “The initial results from the Itumbula West-1 well are very positive. The wireline logs are the crucial next step in identifying which intervals we will test and sample for further evaluation.”

“By running an image log this time around in conjunction with a full logging suite and having the well test equipment on site, we are able to fully evaluate the helium and hydrogen potential in this well and establish whether we have a viable helium and/or hydrogen play.”

Helium One will now rig up for wireline operations to log the entire well. Following wireline operations, the team will then perform an open-hole well test across the faulted zone and additional zones of interest once a full petrophysical analysis of the wireline logs is complete.

Downhole samples will be taken and evaluated onsite using the pressure-volume-temperature field laboratory. Any additional samples will be sent off to a specialised noble gas laboratory for further verification.

Helium One started drilling at the Itumbula West-1 well earlier this month (January 2024).

Helium Super Summit

Join gasworld in October 2024 as our Helium Super Summit heads to Houston. More information, including our theme and agenda, will be released over the coming weeks – you can register your interest to ensure you stay updated.

Our Helium Super Summit 2023 agenda was focused on the most significant challenges facing the helium business in 2023/24 and the uncertainty that hangs over the market and its array of end-users. Our 2023 summit has had over 400 attendees and is sold out, so we recommend securing your space. You can book your ticket or register interest here https://bit.ly/gasworldconferences .
