Higher Canada tariffs applied as US moves on 92 countries


The US has raised Canada tariffs to 35% from today [1 August], a 10% increase, and introduced new levies on 92 countries overall.

The charges relate to Canadian exports not covered under the Canada–US–Mexico agreement. US tariffs have largely circumvented Canada’s energy exports, including oil, gas, uranium and electricity. Similarly, Canada’s counter tariffs have generally avoided most energy equipment imports.

In a statement, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would continue to negotiate with the US on its trading relationship – while seeking to reassure its domestic market.

“Canadians will be our own best customer … we can give ourselves more than any foreign government can ever take away by building with Canadian workers and by using Canadian resources to benefit all Canadians,” he said.
