Brunei has recently reassured Japan, at a bilateral summit, that it will receive stable long-term supplies of LNG from the sultanate, according to a Japanese foreign ministry statement.
Brunei is thought to account for around 10% of Japan’s LNG imports, with Japan possessing almost no energy resources and largely dependent on imports from the Middle East for its fuel needs.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who is also prime minister of Brunei, reportedly explained that, “we’ve had a good relationship in the past two decades on the supply of LNG, and there will be no problems with supply in the future.”
Japan annually imports 60 million tonnes of LNG from countries led by Indonesia, Malaysia and Australia and has made concerted efforts to diversify its sources of energy.
