JERA gears up for co-firing ammonia coal plant trial

JERA’s co-firing trial involving ammonia and coal at its Hekinan Thermal Power Station is set to start up in the second quarter.

Up to 20% of ammonia is set to be used in the trial, which started with small volumes three years ago. The trial is being run in conjunction with IHI Corporation.

It is believed to be the first demonstration project involving a large amount of ammonia in a large-scale commercial coal-fired power plant.
