Group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd (MHI), MHI Engineering, Ltd. (MHIENG), is set to help decarbonise Japan’s cement industry through the application of its KM CDR Process carbon capture technology.

Announced today (March 29th), the demonstration – set to last nine months, commencing in June – was agreed upon through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between MHIENG and Tokuyama Corporation (Tokuyama), one of Japan’s leading chemicals/cement manufacturers.

Having been successfully used across a range of commercial applications, MHIENG’s technology aims to help reduce emissions in notoriously hard-to-abate industrial sectors such as cement, steel, and waste-to-energy (WtE) plants.

Ahead of the test, a mobile CO2 unit manufactured by MHIENG is being installed at Tokuyama’s existing cement plant in Shunan, Yamaguchi Prefecture, where CO2-containing flue gas produced from the cement kiln will be introduced into the unit.
