Nitrous oxide retail sales to be banned under UK law

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is to be banned for consumers under new government plans which aim to take a ‘zero tolerance’ approach on tackling anti-social behaviour associated with abuse of the gas.

Announced today (27th March), the ban is part of a wider Anti-Social Behaviour Action Plan which intends to deliver ‘swift and visible justice’ to perpetrators.

According to the government, the new law will make retail sale and possession of the gas a criminal offence for the first time. With further details set to be released today, the ban is expected to be issued under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
