Ammonia-powered shipping is a promising response to the need to decarbonise the shipping sector.

Ammonia, synthesized from green hydrogen, represents a sustainable, zero-emission fuel.

Funded by the Nordic Innovation fund, the first phase of the NoGAPS (Nordic Green Ammonia Powered Ships) project ran from 2020 to 2021 to study the parameters that should be included in the design of a proposed ammonia-powered ship, including safety, health effects of ammonia, risk of explosion, environmental impact, and potential corrosive effects of the fuel.

The purpose of the proposed ship is to transport liquified ammonia while running on the same non-polluting fuel.
