Norway and Germany plan new hydrogen pipeline in drive for energy security

Norwegian energy company Equinor and RWE will work together to level up Europe’s low carbon hydrogen value chain by exploring several building blocks that will contribute to Germany’s phase-out roadmap for coal and development of new hydrogen infrastructure.

Having signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 5th, the partners will construct new gas power plants (CCGTs) to be fuelled initially with natural gas before gradually introducing a hydrogen mix with the eventual ambition for the plants to be run on hydrogen when volumes and technology are available.

The deal will also see the companies building production facilities in Norway to produce low carbon hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS) – so-called blue hydrogen. According to Equinor, more than 95% of the CO2 will be captured and stored safely and permanently under the seabed offshore Norway.
