Nova Clean Energy secures 1 GW wind, solar and green ammonia project in Texas

Renewable energy company Nova Clean Energy (Nova) has acquired HyFuels, a portfolio comprising over 1 gigawatt of mid-to-late-stage wind and solar development projects, along with an early-stage green ammonia project.

Located on the Texas Gulf Coast, HyFuels comes equipped with a project footprint of about 25,000 acres and has a power supply that is split evenly between wind and solar.

The first phase of the project is expected to reach Full Notice to Proceed (NTP) in 2025 and commercial operations in 2026.

The acquisition of HyFuels by Nova comes from BNB Renewable Energy (BNB), a developer with nearly two decades of experience in wind and solar projects across the United States and Mexico, serving various industrial clients.

“This is an exciting project, and we’re pleased to have partnered with the Nova Clean Energy team to bring it to market,” said Jos Nicholas, CEO of BNB.

“Together, we and Nova look forward to working with and learning from this community in Calhoun and Victoria counties in order to bring low-cost electricity and green ammonia to this amazingly productive part of Texas and our nation’s economy.”

Since joining forces in mid-2023, Nova and BNB have collaborated closely to advance the HyFuels complex. Their efforts have included conducting essential environmental surveys, establishing feasible grid connection schedules, and procuring critical long-lead-time equipment.

The complex aims to boost the available power sources to serve the fast-growing demand of the Texas grid.

Although in its early stages, the green ammonia project will add to a number of similar initiatives being undertaken in the US.

CF Industries is constructing North America’s first commercial-scale green ammonia production facility at its Donaldsonville Complex in Louisiana.

Last year, KBR was selected by Avina Clean Hydrogen to supply its K-GreeN technology for Avina’s green ammonia project in Texas.

Once complete, the Neuces Green Ammonia facility targets a production capacity of 800,000 metric tonnes per annum and is set to become the largest zero-emission green ammonia production facility in North America.
