Following on from the recent 1895 podcast on ‘Where did it go wrong for hydrogen?’, the latest episode focuses on areas where hydrogen is making a positive difference, in ‘Where hydrogen is going right?’
Our hosts Rob Cockerill and Tom Dee begin by picking out key stories from 2025 which showcase tangible progress, highlighting projects that have reached final investment decision (FID), from Scandinavia to South America, and the Middle East to Asia-Pacific.
Europe is seeing a swell of activity, fuelled by the Clean Industrial Deal and other policy developments. Up to 500GW of hydrogen production could reach FID this year.
The UK is also stepping on the hydrogen pedal, following the recent Hydrogen Auction Round 2 which shortlisted 27 projects.
While the committing of finance and regulatory challenges persist, the over-riding message is that it is not all doom and gloom. Progress is there to be seen.
“There is far more going on now than there was five years ago – it’s important to keep perspective,” said Cockerill.
“It’s all about getting those building blocks in place … to get out of this hydrogen winter. It’s these small pockets, these smaller scale investments taking FID in the next few years, that will start to prove the [case] for hydrogen – that’s what we need to see,” said Cockerill.
“We always knew that there would be hotspots in various parts of the world where the fundamentals for hydrogen are far more favourable – you have the climate, the right grid set up, to make it happen.
“The jury is always out on ‘green versus blue’, and people trying to avoid the colour palette under low carbon – we just need to get the hydrogen [off] the ground and moving to prove the business case.”
The podcast also features Sam French, who recently appeared on a webinar outlining how best to ramp up large-scale hydrogen projects. And it looks back to a recent hydrogen finance webinar which provided tips and insights on how to finance a project by calculating its risks.
