Proton OnSite, subsidiary of Nel ASA, has been awarded a $1.8m contract for its participation in the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Water Splitting Benchmarking Project.

The purpose of this project is to accelerate the cost reduction efforts in generating low-cost hydrogen (H2) production from all four major water splitting pathways, including proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis. Proton will take the lead role in overseeing the entire project and will be directly responsible for the PEM pathway.

Proton’s Vice-President of Research and Development, Kathy Ayers, who has been named the overall project lead on behalf of Proton, enthused, “We are very pleased to announce our participation in the DOE’s Advanced Water Splitting Benchmarking Project and are proud that Proton was selected to lead parts of the project with impact across the industry wordwide.”

The project is a critical piece of the DOE’s HydroGEN Energy Materials Network (EMN) consortium. It was recently launched to accelerate the discovery and development of materials for low cost H2 production, enabling energy storage, resiliency and economic opportunities across sectors.
