Leading Corn Belt business POET is growing in liquid CO2 and dry ice

The Corn Belt covers a huge swathe of the Midwestern US. Its patchwork of cornfields, nestled between the Great Plains to the west and the Appalachian Mountains to the east, is one of the most productive agricultural regions on the planet. And that productivity translates into some staggering numbers. Over 36% of the world’s corn comes from the US, and most of it from this fertile region – and it is still growing every year.

A big driver for this expansion has been the growing of corn for bioethanol. Bioethanol is these days blended with gasoline for fuel, reflecting how since 2005 the federal government’s Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) has mandated that gasoline producers blend in more renewable fuels. The amount the RFS requires to be mixed in has gone up bit by bit since the policy’s start, and today more than 15 billion gallons of corn ethanol are used annually.
