SAF to be used in Singapore departing flights from 2026

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) must be used in flights departing Singapore from 2026, according to a new government blueprint.

While the initial targets are modest – 1%, rising to 3-5% by 2030 – it marks a significant move from one of the world’s leading aviation hubs, as policymakers and airlines come under increased pressure to stem emissions, and pay for decarbonisation.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) will introduce a SAF levy for the purchase of SAF to achieve the uplift target. The levy will vary based on factors such as distance travelled and class of travel. Singapore Changi Airport handled 58.9 million passengers last year.

“As an indication, we estimate that the levy … could increase ticket prices for an economy class passenger on a direct flight from Singapore to Bangkok, Tokyo and London by around S$3, S$6 and S$16 respectively. Passengers in premium classes will pay higher levies,” according to a CAAS statement.
