Skytree launches direct air capture unit for onsite CO2 generation

Climate tech company Skytree has launched its first direct air capture (DAC) unit for onsite carbon dioxide (CO2) generation.

Dubbed the Skytree Cumulus, the unit captures CO2 from ambient air and makes it available for use by indoor farmers and greenhouse growers in the production of food, algae, vaccines, and flowers.

The unit can deliver an interrupted supply of up to 10kg of CO2 in a 24-hour period, delivering clean and affordable CO2 to businesses while alleviating procurement and transport challenges.

Rob van Straten, CEO of Skytree, described the launch as an incredibly exciting moment.

“By enabling the generation of CO2 onsite at farms and greenhouses, we are taking a significant step forward in helping CEA businesses reduce their carbon footprint and transition away from the fossil fuel industry as a source for CO2 supply,” he added.

The Skytree Cumulus is available to order with first units set for shipping in 2024. Specifically, the launch is set to benefit controlled environment agriculture (CEA).

Van Straten adds, “Every tonne of CO2 captured at an oil refinery can lead to 1.5 tonnes of emissions released back into the atmosphere. We’re providing CEA businesses the opportunity to operate independently of the oil and gas industry while having guaranteed access to CO2.”

Skytree is already developing a second, larger DAC unit with an eye toward expanding to building materials and enabling other hard-to-abate industrial industries to move away from CO2 sources from the fossil fuel industry.

The largest unit is expected to be available in the second half of 2024.
