Taiwan firm to build $1bn LNG regasification facility
Taiwanese engineering, procurement, and construction company CTCI has been awarded a NT$29.6bn (around $926m) contract by state-owned CPC Corporation to build a new regasification facility at the Kaohsiung Intercontinental LNG Receiving Terminal.
Scheduled for completion in 2030, the facility will convert liquefied natural gas from four cryogenic tanks, each with a capacity of 180,000 kilolitres at –162°C, into natural gas. It will be capable of processing up to 1,600 tonnes per hour.
CTCI Chairman Michael Yang said the company would apply green and intelligent technologies to improve efficiency.
“For the regasification facility, CTCI will leverage green and intelligent technologies to save energy, cut carbon emissions, and make construction more time-efficient.”
The terminal will use seawater to heat LNG during regasification, while cold energy recovered from the process will be used to power the site’s air conditioning system. CTCI will also deploy in-house technologies such as a pipeline-cleaning robot and automated flange fastening modules to enhance safety and quality during construction.
Global LNG demand is forecast to grow by 60% by 2040, while Taiwan is expanding its gas import capacity as part of efforts to support energy security and the transition away from coal.
CTCI has provided services for all of Taiwan’s operational LNG receiving terminals and has also contributed to 11 LNG projects in China, India, and Thailand, amounting to around 40 million tonnes a year of LNG supply capacity.
