Tecnimont wins Abu Dhabi ammonia plant contract


Tecnimont S.p.A (MAIRE Group) has been awarded the construction contract for a 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) low-carbon ammonia production facility in Abu Dhabi which aims to open in 2027.

TA’ZIZ, a chemicals and transition fuels ecosystem under development in Al Ruwais Industrial City, announced the contract at the Make it in the Emirates forum in conjunction with shareholders Fertiglobe, Mitsui & Co. and GS Energy Corporation.

The facility aims to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in low-carbon fuels and capitalise on growing demand for low-carbon ammonia as a carrier fuel for clean hydrogen. Construction is set to begin in the third quarter.

A preliminary life cycle assessment study estimates that Phase 1 – where total investment exceeds $5bn – will produce 50% lower-carbon intensity ammonia compared with conventional ammonia.
