In an address to US Congress in early March, freshly installed second-term US President Donald Trump harshly criticized the US CHIPS Act, which authorizes $52.67bn to build semiconductor capacity, calling it “a horrible, horrible thing.”
His comments came shortly after Taiwanese semiconductor foundry TSMC had announced an additional $100bn investment in three new fabs – two advanced packaging fabs, and a research and development center in Arizona – taking its overall investment in the state to $165bn.
