US RNG Coalition reaches 500th facility milestone


The 500th renewable natural gas (RNG) facility has been commissioned in North America, according to the RNG Coalition. RNG is known as biomethane or upgraded biogas in other jurisdictions.

A map shows California leading the way with 233 facilities, by some distance ahead of second placed Texas (57) and New York (45). Many US states and Canada provinces are still at an early phase, with facility counts in the low digits or 20s. Ontario (34) is the stand-out province in Canada, ahead of British Columbia (16) and Alberta (10).

The landmark number is significant for the industry and the Sustainable Methane Abatement & Recycling Timeline (SMART) initiative.
