Wärtsilä to supply biogas to Sweden bioLNG project, seals €100m Latin America order

Wärtsilä will supply its biogas liquefaction technology for a new bioLNG project in Mönsterås, Sweden – and deliver engines to a large power plant in Latin America after scooping a €100m-plus order.

In the first instance, the system has been ordered by Scandinavian Biogas Mönsterås, a joint venture company between Scandinavian Biogas Fuels (SBF), the majority owner, and local farmers supplying manure and agricultural waste.

BioLNG, a substitute for fossil LNG, will be used as transport fuel for heavy vehicles, thereby contributing to a fossil-free transport system. The order was booked in Wärtsilä’s order intake in December 2022.

The system will have the capacity to produce 30 tonnes per day of bioLNG and will be the first project of this capacity using Wärtsilä’s amine scrubber type Puregas CA technology to pre-treat the biogas, which is then liquefied using the company’s mixed refrigerant (MR) process.
