The Equipment Survey

FIBA Technologies, Inc. pioneered the use of ultrasonic examination (UE) technologies to requalify cylinders and was the first company to receive a US Department of Transportation (DOT) permit for this process. Our technology is always evolving to improve throughput and test accuracy. Our latest system immerses the cylinders in couplant to reduce inconclusive tests and improve system accuracy.

Seven channels identify anomalies such as sidewall and sidewall-to-base transition (SBT) cracks, folds, wall thinning, pitting, and general corrosion using two longitudinal, two transverse, and two oblique sensors, and one thickness sensor. Our fully automated system continuously displays data acquisition in real time and retains data for future analysis. The transducer head assembly travels the cylinder surface in a helical pattern to assure coverage by each sensor. Our system includes separate loading and offloading hardware to decrease material handling time. From start to finish, UE is completed in less than two minutes for the largest cylinders. UE protects the environment by eliminating the need to remove hazardous gases from cylinders during the testing process. It also prevents product contamination by eliminating the introduction of water into the cylinders. UE has become the preferred method of cylinder requalification throughout the world, is encouraged by DOT, and referenced in ISO standards.
