The latest climate models show that even if emission reduction targets set by The Paris Agreement are achieved, significant climate problems will remain. There’s a lot of discussion and direction on how to prevent emissions, but the challenge still lies in how we catch those negative emissions.
gasworld spoke with Steve Oldham, the CEO of Carbon Engineering (CE) – the small company with a global solution – to understand how the company’s technology can help to alleviate climate change. “Right now, the government’s focus is primarily on CO2 emission reduction, because a solution for removing atmospheric CO2 has not existed in the past. We now have that solution,” Oldham enthused.
Carbon Engineering (CE) was founded in 2009 by Professor David Keith, who at the time was a professor at Calgary University in Canada. The objective of the company was to develop and commercialize technology that captures industrial-scale quantities of CO2 directly from the air. In 2015, after attracting funding, the company moved its headquarters to British Columbia and constructed a pilot Direct Air Capture (DAC) plant. In 2017, CE incorporated fuel synthesis capability into the pilot plant to demonstrate the company’s AIR TO FUELSTM technology.
