Unravelling life: Cryo-EM continues to open up discoveries about diseases

0

Cryogenic-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) is being hailed as a game-changer in medical research and increasing the capabilities of those trying to make breakthroughs in diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancers, HIV, Ebola, malaria, ‘flu, Zika, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Thermo Fisher Scientific, which has its global headquarters in Waltham, MA, is at the forefront of developments in cryo-EM equipment with its Krios G3i Cryo-TEM and Glacios Cryo-TEM which are helping speed the path to new disease research, prevention and treatment.

Cryo-EM, a technique where a sample is cooled to cryogenic temperatures (below -180°C), enables unprecedented levels of insight into biomolecular research as it allows scientists to create 3D images of proteins and viruses, and helps them to better understand how proteins in the body operate and malfunction.
