The UK’s thriving manufacturing industry was a “key driver”, for the ENERGAS and ENGWELD deal, due to a 2.2% growth in 2011 – which represents 11.5% of GDP.
Air Liquide has an established a presence in the UK, principally through the supply of Bulk, Packaged and Specialty Gases to a broad spectrum of manufacturing industries as well as for technology, science, research and leisure applications. ENERGAS & ENGWELD were founded in 1960 by Alf Robinson.
Over the years, under continuous family ownership and management, headed up by Mike Robinson, both entities have been successfully developed into well-established, independent suppliers of Packaged Gases, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, and Welding and Engineering Equipment/Consumables. With headquarters in Hull, they operate several sites in the UK. They employ 208 employees, with total 2011 sales of £35 million from a wide and diverse customer base.
This acquisition confirms Air Liquide’s commitment to the UK market and its customers and develops further customer-oriented, added value elements to our presence here in the UK:
• Enhanced capability in the production and distribution of Packaged Gases to meet changing customer and market needs
• Increased geographic coverage giving greater benefits to customers of Packaged Gases and associated products and services
• Continued diversification into Liquefied Petroleum Gas in addition to the extension of our capabilities related to engineering, welding and fabrication products and services.
Sylvie Villepontoux, Managing Director of Air Liquide UK Limited, commented, “We welcome the employees of ENERGAS and ENGWELD. This acquisition brings further breadth to Air Liquide’s existing activities in the UK. It strengthens our position in this country and contributes to our growth strategy by opening up promising opportunities for expansion.”
