At the Automat in New York City, Horn & Hardart’s chain of cafeteria-style restaurants where food of all kinds was mechanically dispensed from a wall of windows (no servers involved), I got my first glimpse of automation.

In doing research for this article, I find myself again confronted with a seemingly endless wall of products, all displayed through a series of windows of quite another sort and with many servers involved.

Like the food choices at the Automat, the automated selection of applications impacting the packaged gas supply chain seems endless. The cloud, telemetry, GPS, robotics, software, hand held devices, smart valves, and more have transformed the way industrial gases are distributed. To put this all in perspective, we asked some industry experts for their views on automation in the industrial gas industry.
