Air gases, energy usage, and Net Zero


Some of today’s air separation units incorporate on-site renewables to green the production of air gases, but it’s a tiny part of the wider picture. The grid-derived power that’s used to run nearly all of North America’s ASUs matters more. Christian Annesley ponders the progress of the industrial gas majors

The sustainability commitments by the industrial gases industry – and particularly those by the dominant majors and other large producers – are a matter of public record today, in a world where every organization has made Net Zero commitments as well as reporting on the metrics of sustainability progress every year.

In this context, the electricity consumed in the production of air gases is the single biggest contributor to the carbon footprint of industrial gas producers.
