Specialty gases are widely used in a variety of industries. Some of these industries include food and beverages, oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical manufacturing, electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceutical and medical, and welding, as well as many others.

Because these gases are typically used in critical applications, they need to achieve a purity standard and contaminants need to be identified. Purity standards and definitions vary. With regards to gases, the purity is monitored by identifying the impurities present in that specific gas. Impurities are known as additional or extra components present in any specific gas. Usually, there are minimum standards for impurity levels in gases based on the criticality of the application in which they are used.
