To date, the US has more than 2,400 sites producing biogas in all 50 states: at the latest count, 473 anaerobic digesters on farms, 1,269 water resource recovery facilities using an anaerobic digester, 102 stand-alone systems that digest food waste, and 566 landfill gas projects.1

While these numbers may seem high, there is much more that could be done, since most projects are on the small sides. And compared to European countries, the numbers are in fact nowhere near what they might be. But the opportunity in the US is huge and biogas production could help manage the millions of tons of food, water, and animal waste in the country.
