Innovation push is driving ammonia

The opportunity in hydrogen, whether blue or green, is closely allied to ammonia, since it holds such potential as a transport medium for hydrogen and as an energy carrier.

While blue ammonia production is currently limited to places where carbon dioxide captured from steam methane reforming can be stored, such as the UAE, the US Gulf Coast, and Norway, the longer-term opportunity is expected to be unlocked through green technologies.

Ammonia’s expanded role – from a fertiliser feedstock primarily and into the energy space – is now gaining momentum. That’s not only due to its hydrogen content, but also because it can be transported more easily than hydrogen itself, stored as a liquid under moderate pressure, and also used directly as fuel, particularly in hard-to-electrify sectors like shipping. The infrastructure to transport is already in place, too, even if more will investment be needed.
