The Case for Recycled Carbon Dioxide

With the on-going political discussion of carbon cap-and-trade, sequestration, and other environmental initiatives, Cool Clean Technologies, Inc. (www.coolclean.com) has witnessed confusion among its customers that are considering the purchase of carbon dioxide-based equipment for cleaning, cooling, and extraction applications.

End-users of our CO2-based cleaning technologies are concerned that potential legislative efforts to curb carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions might affect them financially in the future, if these technologies were to be considered “emitters” of carbon into the environment. Our response to this question, as supported by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (www.epa. gov), is that users of our CO2-based technologies will not be considered generators of new CO2 emissions as they are using recycled CO2 originally generated from other industrial processes, which would have otherwise gone directly into the atmosphere. In fact, the use of recycled CO2 in our various commercial applications replaces petroleum-based lubricants/ coolants/cleaning agents or energyintensive water cleaning and drying processes and effectively sequesters carbon emissions. By replacing these carbon generating sources with recycled CO2, net carbon emissions to the environment are reduced.

Target markets for Cool Clean technologies include the precision cleaning of hard disk drives, medical devices, and semiconductor components; cooling and lubrication processes in the machining of metals and plastics; extraction of oils from biofuel feedstocks; and retail dry cleaning of garments. Cool Clean’s technology base supporting these commercial products encompasses over 80 patents in all phases and many methods of using CO2. Over the past nine years, the Company has consolidated CO2 technology from Intellectual Property (IP) developed internally and has acquired CO2 IP developed by Raytheon, Hughes Aircraft, Chart-MVE, Deflex Corporation, and Micell Technologies.

Source and Supply of Recycled CO2

The sourcing of CO2 for Cool Clean’s various applications has been designed from a systems perspective to accommodate industrial gas standard beverage or industrial grade CO2. In order to provide the most cost-competitive CO2-based solution to produce an attractive return on investment (ROI) relative to conventional cleaning and extraction solvents and lubricant/coolants, it is important that the supply and transportation of CO2 relies only on standard equipment already offered in the marketplace from industry leaders such as Chart Industries (www.chart-industries.com). In the case where higher purity CO2 is required at the end-use point, such as precision cleaning applications, our systems are designed with a pressure boosting and purification module in-line with CO2 supply from the storage to the end-use equipment.
