ADBA Chairman calls for UK biogas benchmarking

The Chairman of the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) wants to see the UK biogas industry benchmarked against best practice.

During a seminar with Tim Gould, the International Energy Association (IEA)’s Chief Energy Economist, at the World Biogas Summit 2023 in Birmingham, Chris Huhne urged the IEA to benchmark biogas and biomethane as it does with other sectors and “hold the laggards to account”. Gould said the “suggestion was noted”.

Speaking on the sidelines, Huhne said, “What I’m focused on from an ADBA point of view, is that we have a potentially massive opportunity in the UK and elsewhere, and I want us to be benchmarked against best practice.

“How long does it take to permit, to get planning, and what’s the support scheme going to be? Is it going to be flexible enough so AD plants can be plugged into the gas grid, how quickly are those connections going to happen and can they be flexible enough to plugged into an electricity plant? If neither are possible, can you tanker it and use it for fuel?”
