Air Products South Africa (Air Products) has concluded a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Mulilo Renewable Project Developments (Mulilo) that will see the industrial gas supplier purchasing up to 75MW (megawatts) of renewable energy from a solar farm to be built in the Northern Cape, South Africa.
According to Air Products, the facility will have the capacity to generate around 240 gigawatt hours (Gwh) of electricity per year, to be supplied by wheeling from the solar farm to Air Products’ air separation units (ASU) located throughout the country.
Commenting on the agreement, Rob Richardson, Managing Director at Air Products, said, “Air separation is an electrically intensive process and electricity is our most important raw material.”
This agreement is a significant step towards meeting our medium-term goal, which is to reduce fossil-fuel based energy requirements and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by one third by 2030. This project, once completed, will get us a long way down that path, with more to come.”
