Air Products to develop hydrogen station corridor in Alberta

Air Products will build a network of commercial-scale, multi-modal hydrogen refuelling stations along Canada’s Queen Elizabeth II Highway, which runs through Calgary and Edmonton.

The industrial gas giant’s network will serve both heavy-duty vehicles, such as trucks and buses, as well as light-duty hydrogen fuel cell cars. The first station will be in Edmonton and is expected to be operational in 2025.

Rachel Smith, Vice-President and General Manager of Air Products Canada, said that each station will be able to fuel up to 200 heavy-duty trucks or 2,000 cars per day.

She continued, “In Canada, hydrogen is essential to decarbonising transportation, where heavy-duty vehicles travel long distances in extreme temperatures. We are excited to be activating Canada’s first hydrogen corridor here in Alberta.”

It is hoped that the network will help western Canada reach its goal of having 5,000 hydrogen or dual-fuel vehicles on the road in the next five years.

Air Products is also currently developing a multi-billion-dollar net-zero hydrogen energy complex in Edmonton, Alberta. Once operational, the Net Zero complex will produce clean hydrogen and capture and permanently sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, said the development and deployment of hydrogen presents an enormous economic and environmental opportunity for Canadians.

He continued, “The federal government is prepared to seize this opportunity, and the announcement by Air Products shows that Canadian companies and innovators are also continuing to lead the way on hydrogen.”

“I congratulate Air Products on today’s exciting announcement. Together, we will continue to establish Canada as a leading producer and supplier of hydrogen on our path to Net Zero by 2050.”
